Scintec has supplied major LAP®8000 components to Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) for integration into the Atmosperic River Observatories (AROs) at the Oregon and Washington Coasts. The delivery included the radar processors with software, the digital transmitter/receiver units, the beam stearings unit and the antennas for three new locations. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) will integrate, deploy, operate and maintain the network in the framework of an inter-agency ageement with the Department of Energy (DOE).
The new network compliments a similar network of AROs being deployed in California by NOAA Hydrometeorological Testbed (NOAA HMT) through an agreement with the California Department of Water Resources (CA-DWR). Each ARO includes a ¼-scale 449-MHz wind profiling radar that provides wind and temperature profiles every hour from near the surface up to ~8 km for winds and ~2 km for temperatures, depending on weather conditions. DOE and CA-DWR realize the importance of the observations provided by the wind profilers for weather monitoring and wind energy.
